The scream was mental as much as audible, a man’s tortured scream of unbearable pain, and images of black, insurmountable walls, flashes of fire and bursting lights, the impossible vision of time without end, and fear. Indescribable fear.

Adam leapt out of bed, heart thudding, mind a morass of confused visuals and feelings, of darkness and exploding lights and terror. He shook his head to clear his mind, reached out for Oliver, and realized he was alone. Oliver must have returned to his cottage and his mate while Adam slept.

Adam flipped on the light. The room was empty, the sense of something other fading. Until a voice, familiar and beloved, whispered in his ear.

Adam slipped on a pair of sweats and raced barefoot down the outside stairs and into the house. It was the middle of the night, but the kitchen was brightly lit. He heard voices coming from Anton’s study. He ran through the empty kitchen and the dark dining room, into the small study beyond.

The first thing he noticed was the potent scent of sex and the overlying acrid odor of fear. The second was Keisha, kneeling beside Anton. He appeared to be unconscious, lying on the small couch with a blanket thrown over his hips and legs. Liana sat on a low stool off to one side, shivering even though she was conservatively dressed in a black, full-length knit dress. Tears streaked her face and her long, blond hair fell in snarls and tangles to the floor.

Stefan had put on a pair of worn jeans without a shirt, as if he’d thrown them on in a hurry. The button at the waist was undone and his hair uncharacteristically mussed and unbound. He sat at the end of the couch with one hand wrapped around Anton’s foot, as if the connection anchored him.

Adam took in the scene without a word. Then he knelt beside Keisha and rested his hand on Anton’s forehead. His skin was cool, but he was out cold. Adam used his healing abilities to slip inside for a quick look, to check for cerebral injuries or heart problems, but nothing looked or felt wrong.

After a moment Adam slipped back into himself, turned to Keisha and rubbed her shoulder. She was tense as a bow string. “Keisha, I think he’ll be okay in a minute or two. His breathing is fine, his heart rate’s normal. His thoughts seem a little chaotic, but I think he’s beginning to come around. What happened?”

Keisha looked to Stefan. He shot an angry glance at Liana and shook his head. “We were fucking Liana,” he said, practically snarling when he said her name.

Adam jerked his attention from Anton to Stefan at the harsh sound of accusation in his voice, but he kept his thoughts to himself.

“Everything was great, we were all reaching orgasm at once when she shouted something and Anton screamed like he was in incredible pain.
